Contact UsWhat does nitrous oxide feel like?
Nitrous oxide, although it is commonly known as laughing gas, does not necessarily cause patients to laugh when inhaled. Typically, nitrous oxide induces feelings of warmth, relaxation and calm contentment throughout the treatment. While under the effects of nitrous oxide, individuals remain conscious and are able to respond to questions from our team. This type of sedation also wears off rapidly once the gas is discontinued, allowing patients to return to their normal state quickly.
What treatments can nitrous oxide be used during?
Nitrous oxide can be used in combination with any dental treatment. While many patients request it for advanced restorative procedures, like dental extractions or implant placements, it can be used for simple services like routine cleanings. Patients who struggle with dental anxiety may find nitrous oxide particularly beneficial, as it helps reduce anxious thoughts and helps patients sit still for the duration of their treatment.
Does nitrous oxide come with any side effects?
Although nitrous oxide is generally safe when administered by trained dental professionals, it can cause some mild side effects for some individuals. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, tiredness, and headaches. These effects are usually short-lived and should dissipate within 24 hours or less. Should you have any questions or concerns post-treatment, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
Can I drive home or return to work after receiving nitrous oxide?
Due to the rapid onset and offset of its effects, most patients can safely drive home and return to their normal routines after receiving nitrous oxide. However, it’s essential to wait until all the effects have completely worn off before getting behind the wheel or engaging in tasks that require full cognitive function. Patients are always welcome to wait in our lobby as long as they need until they feel comfortable driving themselves home.
